Learn-to-Swim Class Level Descriptions
Our classes incorporate developmental milestones to gain confidence in the water
Wing Buddies - Ages 6 mos. to 3 yrs. w/Adult - Introduction to Water. Adults and instructors work together to develop the infant and toddler-age swimmer's comfort level in the water through song and play. Tips for a Successful Transition from Wing Buddies to Swallowtails
Swallowtails - Ages 2.5+; no adult assistance - Independent Water Exploration. Offers swimmers the first opportunity to learn basic water exploration skills unsupported; they must be comfortable in the water without a parent.
The Swallowtails class is designed for young swimmers who can independently enter and safely exit the water in chest-deep water. During this class, they will learn to float on their back and front, blow bubbles, retrieve objects, and roll from front float to back. They will also start to develop skills related to the streamline position and jumping into the pool with assistance. Learn-to-Swim Class II
Skippers - Ages 4+ - Fundamentals of Water. The Skippers class focuses on building essential swimming skills. Your child will learn to maintain a proper streamlined position, roll to back from the front float, and demonstrate flutter-kicking actions while blowing bubbles. There are more unsupported skills, such as retrieving an object and jumping into chest-deep water, than supported skills. Swimmers must have completed Swallowtails or have equivalent skills. Learn-to-Swim Class III
Birdwings - Ages 5+ - Introduction to Aquatic Skills and Stroke Readiness. Gives swimmers more success with fundamental skills. Swimmers will learn: To retrieve objects underwater, Water safety skills, Rhythmic breathing with support, Float on the back, Glide on the front, Flutter kick on back and front, Deepwater orientation, Combined stroke on front and back using kick and alternating arm action. Swimmers must have completed Skippers or have equivalent skills. Learn-to-Swim Class IV
Parent Note: Water Wings Swim imagined the Birdwings class as a space for school-age swimmers who may not have had formal swim lessons and could feel out of place in an introduction to the water-fundamentals class.
