Swimmer Experience

The Water Wings model celebrates a semi-private lesson embedded in small groups in our Learn-to-Swim classes (e.g., Swallowtails, Skippers, Birdwings). That means Water Wings maintains a 1:2 swimmer/instructor ratio. Many instructors with lots of new swimmers make for a safe and engaging experience!

Water Wings maintains a 1:3 swimmer/instructor ratio in our Become-a-Skilled-Swimmer courses (e.g., Admirals, Apollos, Emperors). Experienced instructors with confident swimmers make for a safe and effective experience!

“What If I Miss a Lesson?”

Trademark: There are no make-up classes or courses for Trademark small-group lessons.

Busy Butterfly: There are no make-up classes or courses for Busy Butterfly small-group lessons.  However, “Busy Butterfly” participants may request an alternate week if there is space available.  This request must be approved by Water Wings one week prior to the beginning of that scheduled class or course.

Class Progression

Instructors conduct assessments throughout the session to measure skills acquired by the swimmers. After the session ends, Water Wings communicates new class or course placements through email. Swimmers who do not receive emails expressing new class/course placements repeat the same level. Typically, swimmers repeat the same level class or course multiple times a season before obtaining the necessary skill set to move to the next level.

Water Wings does not track skills for Wing Buddies, our adult-assisted class, as we do with the other group lessons. However, for those of age, who are nearing the potential to join the unassisted group lessons, we encourage recurring dialogue with your lead swim instructor(s) regarding your swimmer's readiness.

Inclement Weather (all pool locations are outdoors): We swim rain or shine.

Since 2005, Water Wings has rarely canceled multiple lessons during a session; more frequently, swimmers experienced a lesson delay. Still, registrants accepted risk during the registration process in choosing outdoor swim lessons with Water Wings Swim. Due to the redesign of our program, offering multiple locations with a more extended lessons season, Water Wings provides no refunds or rescheduling of classes or courses if canceled due to inclement weather.

Due to quickly changing weather patterns in metro Atlanta, weather delays or cancellations are decided and communicated within a half-hour of lesson start times. We seek to delay lessons (e.g., 10, 15, 20, and 25-minute delays) through fluctuations of inclement weather so that our swimmers can partake in their class or course. Based on current weather patterns, instructors remain on-site if the weather changes, and lessons can resume. Cancellations occur on a lesson-by-lesson basis. Lessons are consistently held in light rain and continue when it is raining unless we have thunder and lightning present, or the bottom of the pool is not visible.

*In the unlikely case of more than one (1) class or course cancellation in one week or contamination and/or equipment failure, a make-up lesson will be issued.

In case of inclement weather where lessons will need to be canceled or delayed, Water Wings Swim will communicate through the GroupMe app. The use of GroupMe is only intended for notifying swimmers in this specific session immediately. Water Wings Swim will not, and request that participants not communicate personal information over the GroupMe app. Please rest assured that once the session is concluded, Water Wings will disable this group. Water Wings Swim chose GroupMe because it's easy to use for mixed iPhone and Android users. To participate in our GroupMe notifications, please download the GroupMe app on your smartphone.

We aim to create a delightful atmosphere for parents as much as for our swimmers

Parents are priceless partners. At Water Wings Swim, we crafted an enjoyable atmosphere for parents to sit comfortably at the pool to relax and engage with one another while capturing colorful stories of becoming skilled swimmers.

Please prepare your swimmer for the fact that you will not be with them, especially if your swimmer has strong separation anxiety. In addition, give your swimmer a “toileting” right before the lesson to minimize the need to exit the pool to come find you.

Talk to the instructor

After the lesson, the instructors will make every effort to be available during the short transition break to answer questions. Please keep in mind that there are only five minutes between lessons. Therefore, it may be necessary to speak with the Lead Instructor who is available before and after the lesson. Please take advantage of these opportunities. Your swimmer’s instructors and the Lead Instructor can advise you on the skills that need the most practice and the best way to practice those skills. Keeping apprised of your swimmer’s progress will help them to get the most out of each lesson.

Practice! Practice! Practice!

The most important aspect of the learning process is the reinforcement of the skills learned in the lessons. The best way to do this is to play and practice at the pool. The more time a swimmer spends in the pool learning how their body moves in and reacts to the water, the faster they will pick up the skills taught. More advancement is made between classes during a practice session than actually in lessons where they are learning a skill for the first time. Even if your swimmer just wants to play, it will reinforce that swimming is fun and worth learning. Take them to the pool for a Recreational Swim period to swim/ play with them.
